Quiche Lorraine and "Downton Abbey" for Lunch!

14/01/2013

Bonjour mes amis!

Happy Monday!  Atleast, I hope it's happy for you.  It's a little sad and quiet around here now that all the family has gone back to the U.S.  There's laundry and cleaning to do...but today, I want to reflect back on part of my last day with Ms. Emerald here in France.

We made Quiche Lorraine for Lunch...

...and then enjoyed it watching a little
"Downton Abbey"!

Since arriving in France, I was anxious to find out how the French make such delicious food.  A couple of new friends clued me in to a website...marmiton.org...it's full of delicious recipes in French.  I've found it quite easy to translate most of them, and since the ingredients are available here, I've atleast tried a few new things.  Everyone knows that Quiche Lorraine is a typical French dish, so I had to give it a try, and it was rather easy!

First let me tell you that last week, Ms. Emerald and I went to Paris to shop one day.   The French Government regulates the sales in France, and January is the time for sales, so it was fun!  I managed to pick up this beautiful Tart Pan for only 3 Euros.  (Even Dr. J couldn't argue with that awesome price!)

So...on with the Quiche LorraineHere's the Recipe, and then I'll show you how it came out and how we enjoyed it!

Quiche Lorraine
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes

Ingredients (for 4 people):
 - 200 g shortcrust pastry
- 200 g bacon
- 30 g of butter
- 3 eggs
- 20 cl cream
- 20 cl of milk
- Salt and pepper
- Nutmeg

Preparation of the recipe:
Roll the dough into a mold, prick with a fork.
Fry the bacon in a pan and then spread over the pastry.
Sprinkle butter chips.
Beat the eggs, cream and milk, season with salt, pepper and nutmeg. Pour over batter.
Bake 45 to 50 min at 180 ° C (about 350 degrees).

*I should also mention that I added a small amount of cheese to our Quiche, just after the bacon.

Can you convert those metric amounts if need be?  I hope so.  I'm going to leave you with that challenge, but if you really need help, just leave me a comment...

And now...here's my results...

Ready for the Oven...

In the oven and almost done...

And, lunch is served...

With a little Brie Cheese...

Complimented with a colorful fruit cup...

and the Pièce de Résistance!
(because now I can use this term liberally...)

Meal complete with an Episode of "Downton Abbey"!

I know you're all thinking by looking at the background in this picture...

WOW!  It's January 14 and they still have their Christmas Tree up!

Why, yes we do!  It's still living and beautiful, and the Christmas decorations are all still up in Orléans.  I think they must leave them up longer around here, since they put up decorations later than in the U.S.  Well, the decorations come down for me this week.  It will be sad...

I hope you get to enjoy a little Quiche Lorraine soon!  I know Ms. Emerald and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal!

Have a "Jewel" of a day!

  1. Hey, it's Vicki B.ult! I heard you had a blog about your France adventures and now I'm really enjoying reading it! We were in France for a short time a little over a year ago and enjoyed it very much so your pictures and stories are a treat and bring back some fun memories too. Quiche Lorraine is my favorite and I'm really looking forward to trying this recipe out!

    1. Nice to hear from you Vicki! We are enjoying so many fun things here. France has become comfortable for us now. I've actually been in Paris 7 times since we got here. Where did you go in France?

    2. Wow - 7 times in Paris already! As for our trip, we had already decided on a trip to visit my brother in England and tacked on few days in Dublin and few days in Paris. Loved both for different reasons - Dublin was quirky and fun (and GREEN!) and Paris was beautiful and timeless. We did the typical Louvre/Eiffel/Notre Dame thing but time didn't permit us to see the French countryside but maybe someday..? : ) We are actually planning another visit to see him this spring but picked Germany for our mini-trip this time. So hard to pick just one spot in Europe when it's all so accessible while one is there!

    3. Awesome, Vicki! I LOVE Dublin and the Irish Countryside as well...would definitely go back...but I wouldn't want to drive there...atleast the French drive on the right side of the road!
Germany is a great choice for this year, too! (I'll be blogging about our visit with Missionary friends in the Black Forest yet. We went there Thanksgiving weekend! Very nice area!)
      Stay in touch.
